Treating Periodontal Disease With the Latest Technology

When you come to North Mississippi Periodontics and Implant Dentistry for dental care, you receive the very best treatment available. We treat periodontal disease with the LANAP® laser protocol, a state-of-the-art system that uses directed light instead of a blade to remove diseased tissue.

Our procedure provides a variety of benefits over traditional techniques, and it's more comfortable. If you suffer from gum disease, please call North Mississippi Periodontics and Implant Dentistry to schedule an appointment.

What Is Periodontal Disease?

The word "periodontal" means "near the teeth," and it is the word doctors use to describe your gums and other tissues around your teeth. When these tissues become infected by bacteria, it's called "periodontal disease."

If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to many serious health problems.

  • Loose teeth
  • Teeth falling out
  • Jawbone degeneration
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Pre-term babies

If you have periodontal disease, it's important to receive specialized medical care as soon as possible. Call now!

The LANAP® Laser Protocol

At North Mississippi Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, Dr. Robertson treats periodontal disease with LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) and a PerioLase® MVP-7™. This protocol represents the very latest in medical technology, and it makes your experience as our periodontal patient considerably better than traditional surgical techniques.

LANAP is the only laser protocol available from a north Mississippi periodontist that has been cleared by the FDA. It's backed by human histological studies and scientific research, and it provides you with many important benefits. The PerioLase MVP-7 has also been cleared by the FDA for use in laser surgery. These devices provide the best outcomes for our periodontal patients.

  • A cut-free, stitch-free experience
  • Less pain and less fear
  • No strong medications or general anesthetics required
  • Less bleeding
  • Fast recovery
  • Less chance of gum recession
  • New bone generation

The results are predictable, and they're easy to maintain when you practice good oral care. Most patients are able to return to work and other activities within 24 hours.

Details of the LANAP Gum Disease Treatment

Our LANAP treatment with the PerioLase® MVP-7™ is fairly simple to describe, although the technology that makes it work is quite complex.

  1. Measuring your gum pockets — Dr. Robertson will use a probe to measure your gum pockets and determine how deep they are and how much tissue has detached from the roots of your teeth.
  2. Killing bacteria and removing disease tissue — This is where the laser comes in. Dr. Robertson will direct pulses of light into your gum pockets to remove the diseased tissue and kill any bacteria. The remaining good tissue will eventually heal and reattach to the roots of your teeth.
  3. Removing calculus — Calculus (tartar) below the gum line can lead to reinfection, so Dr. Robertson will use the laser to break up the deposits and an ultrasonic scaler to carry them away.
  4. Blood clotting — Dr. Robertson will use the laser to stimulate blood thickening and clotting to create a protective barrier and begin the healing process.
  5. Compressing gum tissue — Compressing the remaining soft tissue against the roots of your teeth enables it to permanently fuse and become healthy again. Our process requires no stitches or bandages.
  6. Adjusting your bite — Dr. Robertson will make sure that your bite is stable, aligned, and comfortable.
